TU Dortmund University can look forward to the groundbreaking of the Center for Advanced Liquid-Phase Engineering Dortmund (CALEDO) in the next year. With their application, Professor Gabriele Sadowski from the Faculty of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering and Vice-President Research at TU Dortmund University and her dedicated team of researchers emerged successful after four rounds of a tough nationwide competition. On Friday, 24 April 2020, the Science Council announced its final decision – the national and regional governments will each fund 50 percent of the construction costs for the CALEDO building.

The € 72 million in funding represents about € 57 million in construction costs, € 10 million for large-scale scientific apparatus and about € 4 million for the initial setup. The building will have a surface area of 3,606 m2 and provide over 103 workplaces in state-of-the-art laboratories. The University’s success in the research building competition will be reflected in its splendid appearance: CALEDO was designed by internationally renowned Dortmund-based Gerber Architekten.

Customized liquid phases for environmentally friendly processes

“With CALEDO, an internationally visible research center will be established at TU Dortmund University for the knowledge-based design of liquid phases,” says Professor Sadowski. Liquid phases play an important role in natural and industrial processes. For example, without water biological life would be inconceivable. At CALEDO, customized liquid phases will be produced for environmentally friendly and innovative processes in chemistry and biotechnology or for pharmaceutical products. The goal is to study the interactions between the molecules involved in order to drastically reduce the number of costly and time-consuming test series in future.

Six additional professorships

Various research groups at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering of TU Dortmund University are already working very successfully on aspects of this topic. This successful work can also be seen in the acquisition of the RESOLV cluster of excellence, together with Ruhr University Bochum. Now that the funding has been approved, TU Dortmund University will set up a total of six additional professorships in this research field as well as two further professorships with a corresponding focus. The new research building will provide a new home with ideal conditions for scientific work.
