Studium Fundamentale: FAQs

Answers to the most frequently asked questions

Students of the Bachelor’s degree programs in Computer Science (with minor in Econmics and Business Administration), Statistics, Data Analysis and Data Management, Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Information and Communication Engineering, Spatial Planning, Educational Sciences and Journalism as well as of the Master’s degree program in Computer Science are required to participate in the StuFu.

You can usually take Studium Fundamentale at any point in your studies. Most departments recommend to participate from the 3rd semester onwards.

Students register for courses in the LSF under the category “Studium Fundamentale“ . If certain modalities apply to the registration, this is usually noted under the description of the respective course.

The current course catalog can always be found in the LSF under Events, Course Catalog and then on Studium Fundamentale.

Yes, this is generally possible. However, please wait to register for a second course until shortly before the registration deadline so that all students can be guaranteed a place first.

Yes, this is possible. The Department of Cultural Studies is an exception in that here StuFu students can take a course from their own department, as this department consists of thematically independent institutes.

The purpose of Studium Fundamentale is to get to know other subject cultures and to study beyond your own subject. For this reason, it is advisable to take courses at one or two “foreign” departments that interest you. As a student of spatial planning, however, you can also attend, for example, the specialized English course of your own department.

This also depends on the standards of the lecturer. Active participation can include, for example, a presentation, a protocol etc. As a rule, you will learn about the respective conditions during the first event.

Even if you are not a student of a STEM subject, you can take take a physics StuFu course, because the lecturers open up precisely those courses for the StuFu that are also understandable for students from other disciplines.

For courses with the note “certificate of attendance only” („nur Teilnahmeschein möglich“) you can only acquire 2 CPs. However, in order to complete the Studium Fundamentale module, students of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology or Information and Communication Engineering need 3 CPs. For this reason, you cannot take course for which only a certificate of attendance is possible – you need to choose a course with an examination.

This depends on which degree program you are enrolled in.

If the Studium Fundamentale is anchored in your examination regulations with 3 CPs, you choose a course (from a, b, c) and complete it with an examination. Examination modalities are indicated by the respective lecturer. The completion of the course will be shown on the module certificate especially created for the Studium Fundamentale.

If the Studium Fundamentale with 5 CPs is integrated in your study regulations, two courses designated for the Studium Fundamentale must be attended. You can combine them as you wish, but at least one of the two courses must be taken at a department other than your own. If you wish to take a course at your own department, it must have an interdisciplinary focus and be designated for the Studium Fundamentale. One of the two courses will be completed with an examination. Examination modalities are indicated by the respective lecturer. The second course requires active participation. The completion of both courses is shown on the module certificate, which is specially created for the Studium Fundamentale.

The performance required to receive the CPs is regulated by the lecturer. In most cases, instructions are given right at the beginning of the first course.

For courses that you complete with an examination, you usually receive 3 CPs. For courses in which you actively participate, you receive 2 CPs.

This is regulated differently depending on the faculty and study program. If your participation or the completion of an examination is not reported directly to the central examination administration and entered in Boss, you will receive a certificate on the module certificate of the Studium Fundamentale. After completing the course or passing the examination, please take the certificate to the course administration, who will sign it for you. The completed module certificate should then be forwarded to your examination office.

You register via the preferred method of the respective lecturer.

You can download the module certificate in the Download section.

In almost all cases, a “pass” is sufficient. Exceptions apply to the B.Sc. BCI: If a grade is awarded in the course you have chosen, this will be included in the overall grade of the Bachelor’s certificate. If no grade is awarded for the course you have chosen, but only a “pass”, then accordingly not.

If courses with exams are offered, they are usually optional and not mandatory. You can also choose two courses with examinations and then decide in which one you will take the examination.

Once the lecturers have signed off on the required achievements on the module slip, they will forward the module slip to your examination office. The CPs will then be “credited” to you there.
