Overview

Students enrolled in the Bachelor’s degree program in Educational Sciences receive a solid basis for demanding, professional, theory and research-based work in education and social welfare. They acquire knowledge of the fundamental theoretical standpoints of educational research and gain specialist expertise through the study of a compulsory elective subject. In addition, they build up a portfolio of methodologies and concepts related to the professional field of educational research.

The first year of the program focuses on the general fundamentals of educational research and the acquisition of basic skills in the areas of intermediation, consulting, planning and research. From the beginning of the second semester onwards, students additionally commence studies in the compulsory electives.

The compulsory electives are worth 45 credits. They should be chosen carefully and with a view to students’ later career ambitions. The Department itself offers the following subject areas: Social work, education management/education research, sociology and psychology. It is also possible to choose compulsory electives from other departments at TU Dortmund University.

Skills and knowledge

No prior knowledge is required. Applicants should be interested in working with people and in social topics. Alongside strong social skills, (prospective) students should be ready to try out something new and be highly and easily motivated.

Field of activity

The program prepares students for a wide range of professions, for example educational, planning and organizational work in local government, youth education centers, training institutions (e.g. adult education centers), state institutes, charities and church organizations, research institutions, (corporate/HR) consulting, publishing houses, vocational training centers or corporate HR development departments. Students can also qualify further by pursuing a Master’s degree.

Additional information

The program includes an internship semester. This should be completed in the fields covered by the combination of educational research and compulsory electives. The aim is for students to test the skills they have acquired in the program, to become part of a practical working environment as well as to gather and reflect on their experiences in professional practice. The internship semester can be completed abroad and as a research internship.
