With around 3,700 employees, TU Dortmund is one of Dortmund's largest employers. It has done much to help transform the city and the Ruhr region from Europe's largest coal and steel industry into a high-tech and service hub and cultural metropolis. At the edge of the campus, two high tech centers, the TechnologieZentrumDortmund and Europe's largest technology park, successfully implement research ideas in industrial and business formats.
The Ruhr metropolitan region inspires scientists to forge new paths in research, from energy, logistics and urban planning to educational policy. To integrate research and education even more deeply in the Ruhr region, TU Dortmund established the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr (UAMR) together with the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Universität Duisburg-Essen in March 2007.
Students and scientists benefit greatly from TU Dortmund University’s active relationships with its neighbors in the region and with partners around the world. One out of every ten students comes from abroad. The university also welcomes around 150 exchange students each year who study German language and culture as well as subjects in their major areas of interest.
That this cosmopolitanism goes hand in hand with local patriotism can be seen every fall when the university rector welcomes the new students in Dortmund’s largest lecture hall – the football club Borussia Dortmund's home stadium.
