DELTA, the Dortmund electron accelerator facility, is a central research institution of the TU Dortmund. The facility is one of four synchrotron radiation sources in Germany and worldwide the only one at a university. Due to precisely accurate radiation with and measuring of X-rays it allows, for example, the exact identification of the consistence of an object without damaging it. At DELTA electrons are so heavily accelerated that they almost reach light speed. When one uses magnet fields to force these electrons to stay on a circular path, they give off very intense, strongly focused X-rays, the so-called synchrotron radiation.
